When someone goes through a traumatic event or traumatic situation, it leaves a scar on them. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder is an aftereffect of a traumatic situation that a person deals with. Whenever something similar happens around them, they start to panic. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a constant state of fear and anxiety that affects the day-to-day activities of the person. PTSD does not always occur directly after the traumatic event, in some cases, people choose to repress the memories they have of the event. So, the symptoms of PTSD don’t show immediately, but the memories eventually get triggered as they grow old. Anybody that performed a passive role in a traumatic event might also get diagnosed with PTSD. A person could only be diagnosed with PTSD after months as the symptoms don’t start to show instantly

THINGS THAT PTSD LEADS TO

  • Difficulty in communicating and concentrating.
  • It leads to nightmares that highlight the event.
  • It also causes flashbacks of the event.
  • A trembling feeling and sweating are also said to be very common.
  • Emotional Numbing – In some cases, people choose to feel nothing, this is considered to be one of the defense mechanisms.
  • Irritability – People start getting irritated due to the stress, which in turn leads to anger issues.
  • Misuse of drugs and alcohol addiction is also very common.
  • Self-harm is one of the defense mechanisms.

Either way, any defense mechanism is said to be extremely destructive. And, talking to a professional is the only way out of PTSD.

FEW CAUSES OF PTSD

Around 7-8% of the population is said to face PTSD at least once in their lives. Lack of mental support from others also adds to the anxiety caused after a traumatic event.

PTSD could be cured with the help of treatments, that includes medications, therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). In CBT, the person is asked to talk about the memories they have of the event. The therapist supports them by revising their way of recollecting the details of the event. Talking about the event with a professional and seeking their help is an effective way of coping with the anxiety and stress caused due to the event. Group therapies are also one of the treatments. As the person could receive the support that he’s been looking for. Taking help is always better than slipping into the miserable hole of anxiety, depression, and stress.
